When we migrate, we pack everything in our suitcase. Some brave the journey without the relevant language experience: The brave explorer. But others pack language skills like an essential, as a necessity in their survival kit: The planner.

Which one are you?

Radio 4 Brainport regularly hosts items about language. These range from language tips by linguist Bart Bruijnen and by certified teachers to hilarious “Dunglish” mistranslations, or from advice on language courses to first-hand experiences from internationals.

Jean-Paul Linnartz had an intriguing interview with Riyana. She has a strong educational background, but could not start a job as pathologist in the Netherlands without mastering the Dutch language. Yet, languages are a strength of her, she speaks a dozen languages and dialects herself already, but nonetheless speaking Dutch is and was a challenge.

So, Riyana found her drive in creating content on-line and has tens of thousands of enganged followers for her vlogs in Bengali. She likes to cover topics from everyday life and she doesn’t shy away from taking about medical issues and dilemma’s; certainly if with her medical background she feel qualified to talk about it.

But being called an influencer, sounds like an insult to her. Influencing for the sake of influencing opinions. Responsibility and accountability is high on her list.
